The contests were held just before spring training, consisted of eight-man elimination tournaments, and were televised on ESPN. The format meant that a player could have the second-most home runs total, as well as in the second round, and fail to reach the final. In 1998, Griffey won his second championship when he tied Jim Thome, 3-3 in the final round. Prior to the 2000s, ties were broken by the number of home runs a player had hit in the regular season to that point. The two competitors would go nine “innings” with each man getting three “outs” per inning. He also took until the seventh inning to hit his first home run, the longest such drought in a contest, and just surpassing Snider, who hit a home run off the trees in the sixth inning of his contest vs. Aaron.

The first Derby in 1985 featured five from each league, and the 1986 and 1987 events featured three and two players from each league, respectively. In 1996, the field was again expanded to ten players, with five from each league (though in 1997, the AL had six contestants to the NL's four). Abreu never hit more than 31 home runs in a season, but he topped that in one night, establishing new records with 41 total homers and a 24-homer first round for his native Venezuela. The eight players represented their home countries in 2005 as part of a promotion for the inaugural World Baseball Classic. In 2004, Miguel Tejada set a single-round record when he hit 15 home runs in the second round, en route to his eventual title.
